Homemade Birthday Card Ideas
Just for Kids

Homemade Birthday Card Ideas

Homemade Birthday Card Ideas can be easily made just using the craft supplies that you have on hand, especially birthday cards for kids!

I thought of the idea for making a Happy Birthday card for a young boy with a sailboat the other day.

So I rummaged through my craft paper to find different patterns and shades that would work for this simple design.

I didn't have a long banner-like Happy Birthday rubber stamp - so I just printed out the message onto some lightweight cardstock.

I really love homemade birthday card ideas that are colorful - which is why I love this one! The different patterns that I used really add some pizazz to the simple design, too.

The homemade birthday card ideas that you come up with especially for kids are really fun to make because you can use all sorts of different colors and patterns and the kids will love it!

Material Needed:

  • Cardstock for the actual card

  • Different scraps of patterned paper:

Two blue patterns for the sky and water.
One dark pattern for the boat.
A red pattern for the sails and as a border for the star.
A light colored card stock for printing the banner "Happy Happy Birthday."
A yellow piece of cardstock for the star.

  • Scissors

  • Printer or rubber stamp for the "Happy Happy Birthday" message

  • Glue or Adhesive of your choice

  • Star stencil

  • Pencil

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Cut and fold your cardstock to the desired size.

  2. Take the blue (for the sky) and cut it to fit just inside the front of the card, leaving a border around it.

  3. Take the blue (for the water) and measure it the same width as the paper for the sky.

  4. Cut a wave-like pattern or rounded waves with the blue patterned paper for the water - make sure the tops of the waves are about 1.5 inches from the bottom, see picture.

TIP: To make cutting the waves, boat, and sails easier, I flipped the patterned paper over and drew an outline with my pencil and used that to help guide me.

  5. Cut the boat pattern into a a bowl-like shape.

  6. Cut two tall and skinny triangles for the sails in the red patterned paper.

  7. Stencil the star onto the yellow cardstock and cut out.

  8. Glue the star onto the red patterned paper.

  9. cut around the star again, leaving a small border of red around it.

  10. Print out (or rubber stamp) the "Happy Happy Birthday" message onto the light colored cardstock.

  11. Cut around the message to resemble a banner.

  12. Snip little triangles on the ends of the "banner."

  13. Glue the "sky" onto the front of the card.

  14. Glue the "boat" onto the card (lightly trace where the waves will be to glue it in the appropriate spot).

  15. Glue on the "sails" to the boat.

  16. Glue the "waves" to the bottom of the card.

  17. Glue the star in the corner.

  18. Glue the banner across the star.
