Handmade Mothers Day Card Ideas

mothers day card ideas 101

Inspiration is everywhere for handmade Mothers Day Card Ideas!

I was inspired to make this handmade Mother's Day card by looking at postage stamps.

Postage stamps are really quite cool looking, it's essentially a squiggly little frame with a picture inside of it!

I had a pair of decorative scissors that have something similar to that squiggly pattern around a postage stamp and I decided to put it to good use!

If you don't have squiggly scissors, do not fear, you can just use whatever decorative scissors you have to create a little frame around a picture of your choosing or you can just leave a straight edge border.

I chose a glittery hummingbird as my postage stamp image, but you can choose whatever image you think would make your handmade Mothers Day Card unique.

Here are some handmade Mothers Day card ideas to get you started:
  • Copy of an old photo of you and your mom. Perhaps you can color it in a drawing program to give it an antiquated look.

  • A picture of your own house, your old stomping grounds. I think that would be a really cool "postage stamp" picture.

  • Pictures of your mom's favorite flowers or animals.

The possibilities are really endless. I love this idea because you can really get creative and choose to create a postage stamp of something that means a lot to you and your mom.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Material Needed:

  • Cardstock for the actual card

  • 4 different types of patterned paper

  • Cardstock for the back of the postage picture

  • Rub-on transfer picture (I used the glittery hummingbird) or picture of your choice

  • Printer or rubber stamps to create the "Happy Mother's Day" message

  • Flower punchouts or little buttons or little flowers

  • Decorative scissors - I used two different cuts

  • Craft knife or paper trimmer

  • Steel ruler

  • Cutting mat

  • Glue/Adhesive of your choice

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Trim and fold your card to the desired size.

  2. Trim one patterned paper to fit on the cover of the card.

  3. Glue patterned paper to the front of the card.

  4. Rub-on transfer your image onto another patterned paper and trim around the picture to create a square or rectangle.

  5. Use your decorative scissors to trim a piece of cardstock a little bigger than your rub-on transfer image to create the postage stamp effect.

  6. Glue your rub-on transfer image onto the cardstock.

  7. Glue your "postage stamp picture" in the lower left hand side of the front of the card.

  8. Trim another patterned piece of paper to fit onto the remaining right side of the card, careful not to cover the postage stamp image.

  9. Use your decorative scissors to cut along the left hand side of that patterned paper.

  10. Glue that piece to the right hand side of your card.

  11. Glue your flower punch-outs to a part of the pattern along the decorative cut side of that patterned paper.

  12. Print out your "Happy Mother's Day" message and trim around it.

  13. Trim around a piece of another patterned paper to create a border around the message.

  14. Glue your message onto the patterned piece of paper.

  15. Glue that that patterned piece of paper with the message to the upper left hand side of the card.

  16. Write a sweet and lovely message to your Mother dearest on the inside!
